Twente beat Ajax to stretch league lead
FC Twente consolidated their position at the top of the premier football league at the weekend with a 1-0 victory over third-placed Ajax.
The result, Twente’s eighth league victory in a row, means there is now a gap of six points between the Enschede side and the Amsterdammers.
PSV Eindhoven retained their second place in the league with a 5-1 victory over ADO Den Haag. The match was halted for a time by referee Roelof Luinge who was angered by chants from the ADO fans. He had given two ADO players a red card.
Rotterdam’s Feyenoord and last year’s champions AZ drew 1-1.
Warning shots
Meanwhile, the Telegraaf reports that police fired two warning shots after a group of some 150 supporters of first division side De Graafschap went on the rampage in the town of Coevorden in the south east of Drenthe province on Sunday afternoon.
The supporters also vandalised a train taking them to a match against Emmen, smashing lamps and windows, a police spokesman told the paper.
Six people were still in custody on Sunday evening.
