Paper tickets could be a thing of the past on all buses and trams in the Rotterdam region from next February if city transport officials get their way.

The city’s metro made the switch to the smart card ov-chipkaart at the beginning of this year but buses and trams have yet to follow. Amsterdam introduced the smart card on its underground railway system this summer.
Rotterdam officials have now applied to junior transport minister Tineke Huizinga to get rid of the paper public transport ticket system altogether from February 11.
