Half of first borns have unmarried parents

Some 50% of first-born babies in the Netherlands do not have married parents, according to new figures on marriage from the national statistics office CBS.

Almost 50% of young women aged 18 to 24 who live with their partner have a child.
Although two-thirds of young couples plan to marry at some stage, the recession means more of them are delaying the big day, the CBS said.
Some 72,000 people are expected to tie the knot in the Netherlands this year, down 3,500 on 2008.
