Disappointment over lightweight job for Kroes
A number of ministers are unhappy that current European competition commissioner Neelie Kroes is to be given the telecoms and IT portfolio in the new commission, the Telegraaf reports on Thursday.
Both Christian Democrat and Labour sources told the paper the post is too lightweight for the Netherlands.
Prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende had said the Netherlands wanted to win one of the heavyweight functions and sources told the Telegraaf he had lobbied for the justice, environment, agriculture and energy portfolios.
Others have also queried the flag-waving surrounding the commission deputy presidency which Kroes is also being offered. They point out the commission already has five deputies.
Commission president José Manuel Barroso is currently finalising the new commission line-up.
