Thieves steal 183 bottles of rare whisky

Whisky experts say the theft of 183 rare bottles from a private collection held at a rented lock-up was probably an ‘inside job’, the Volkskrant reports on Wednesday.

Collector Michiel Wigman discovered the bottles were gone on his return from a long stay abroad. ‘The worst thing would be if I am offered a whisky in a bar for €3 which comes from one of my €4,000 bottles,’ he told the paper.
Wigman is part of a select group of whisky collectors known as the Malt Maniacs. ‘It is impossible to say how much the collection is worth. It is a 20-year passion. Bottles containing malts which are 50 years old and older have gone,’ he said.
