School pupil ‘community service’ plan agreed
All pupils attending pre-university VWO schools will have to take part in a 72-hour community service project from 2011, the education ministry said on Monday.
Pupils in the pre-college schools (havo) will do 60 hours and those at vocational schools 48 hours, the ministry said.
When the plan was first launched in 2007, ministers wanted all school pupils to take part in a three-month community project. This was later reduced to 72 hours.
Now further cuts have been made. The ministry says children at vocational schools only have four years to complete the project and already take part in internships as part of their regular education.
