Gunmen have fired at the home of a local council official in the far southern town of Weert in what may be the latest attack on the council since two illegal marijuana plantations were uncovered and destroyed.
Stones have already been thrown through the windows of Stef Strous’ home. Strous is in charge of social affairs on the council. Earlier, the car belonging to fellow council official Anton Kirkels was set on fire, as was another vehicle in the street where the mayor Jacques Niederer lives.
Police are investigating if the attacks are connected to the arrest of three men aged 23, 25 and 35 who were picked up in connection with the marijuana plantations and later released. A number of vans belonging to energy companies have also been set on fire in the town, local paper De Limburger reports.
