‘ABN Amro will need billions more from treasury’
Nationalised bank ABN Amro will need many billion euros more to complete its independence process, news website z24 said on Friday, quoting banking sources.
The sources said the treasury may have to put as much as €8bn into the bank, which is being merged with Fortis Nederland and will then be privatised.
The extra cash will be needed because ABN Amro’s capital buffers are too low to meet central bank requirements, Z24 said.
Finance minister Wouter Bos has already said more money will be needed. The state’s bill for nationalising the two banks has already run up to €23.3bn, the news website said.
