Three still in hospital after beach party shooting
Three youngsters are still in hospital following Saturday night’s shooting at a beach festival in Hoek van Holland which left one young man dead.
One is in a critical condition, the NRC reported. Six people were injured in the clashes.
The 19-year-old was shot dead after police were called to the Sunset Grooves festival when a group of about 80 youths – possibly football hooligans – began causing trouble.
Several dozen attacked the police armed with knives and firearms, causing them to fire warning shots, the Volkskrant reported.
Videos placed on YouTube show some of the trouble and panic and several shots can be heard. At one point, a large group of young men is heard to be chanting ‘Joden, Joden’ (Jews). However, sources told Nos tv all the shots were probably fired by police. The police have so far declined to comment.
The festival, which was free, had a permit for some 25,000 people, but a spokesman for the ACP police union told the paper up to 40,000 may have been present.
‘It was complete chaos,’ one party-goer told the Telegraaf. ‘Everywhere people had lost their friends, there were fights, and riot police on horseback.’ There were no arrests.
Other eyewitnesses said there had been little in the way of security checks at the entrance to the festival.
