AZ lose and Ajax win as season kicks off

Reigning premier league champions AZ kicked off the football season by losing 3-2 away to lowly Heracles of Almelo on Saturday.


The Alkmaar club’s defeat in their first game under new coach Ronald Koeman was made worse when two AZ players were sent off in the last phase of the match.
Most of the Dutch top clubs are under new managers this season.
Amsterdam’s Ajax pleased their new boss Martin Jol with a convincing 2-0 victory away to FC Groningen on Sunday.
Meanwhile Rotterdam’s Feyenoord put a smile on the face of their new coach Mario Been by beating NEC of Nijmegen 2-0 at home on Sunday.
PSV of Eindhoven failed to hold on to a first-half lead, ending their home game against VVV Venlo 3-3 on Sunday.
FC Twente carried on where they left off last season, beating Sparta 2-0 in Rotterdam on Saturday.
