Man jailed for toddler death on appeal
Arnhem appeal court has jailed a 38-year-old man for seven years for his role in the killing of 17-month old toddler Diego in 2007.
The child’s mother has been jailed for 15 months.
Last year, a lower court found the mother and her ex-boyfriend not guilty of killing the child because there was not enough evidence to prove which of the two was responsible.
Judges said then ‘the violent death is a terrible fact’ but that they could not take the risk of jailing an innocent person.
Baby Diego was ‘used like a boxer’s punchbag’, experts told the appeal court.
Child protection officers had been monitoring the baby boy’s welfare since November 2007.
