Fines for students who misuse grants

Student who claim extra allowances for living out but still live at home with their parents will be fined if caught, education minister Ronald Plasterk said on Wednesday.


At the moment students caught claiming extra cash – €260 a month rather than the €93 a month which stay-at-homes get – only have to pay back the money. Students doing vocational training get €20 a month less than university and college-goers .
On Wednesday, the Volkskrant reported that the fraud could cost taxpayers as much as €80m a year.
Last university year 323,000 students were registered as living away from home.
