FA cancels Newcastle Utrecht match
The English football association has forbidden Newcastle United to play FC Utrecht on July 26 because the club’s arch rival Sunderland is in Amsterdam the same weekend for a tournament.
The match was cancelled because of fears the two clubs’ fans could cause trouble, the FA said in a statement.
Amsterdam’s mayor Job Cohen had said on Monday he was considering banning Sunderland from the Amsterdam tournament.
FC Utrecht had earlier refused to cancel the match.
Club chairman Jan Willem van Dop told the Telegraaf he was really surprised by the cancellation. ‘We have been organising this since June 3,’ he says on the club’s website. ‘And we have not sold any tickets to Newcastle fans, which is part of the agreement.’
Utrecht now needs to find a new side for its opening match.
