Double benefit premiums, ministers told
The social security benefit office UWV has recommended social affairs minister Piet Hein Donner double unemployment benefit premiums to make sure the benefit fund’s assets are topped up.
Since the beginning of this year, workers no longer pay unemployment benefit (ww) premiums, saving a few euros a month. Employers pay 4.15% of basic salary.
With unemployment set to reach almost 10% next year, the benefit office says action is needed to ensure the long-term stability of the fund assets. These are set to go down €3bn to €6.8bn this year, the Volkskrant reports.
Next year, an extra €2bn will be needed to pay benefits but with fewer jobs, less money will be coming in, the benefit office told the paper.
Ministers will decide later this year whether to hike premiums.
