EU elections: ‘Berlusconi anti press freedom’

Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi should face legal action for stiffling press freedom in Italy, Judith Sargentini, leader of the GroenLinks EU election campaign said on Sunday, reports news agency ANP.

Berlusconi now controls the public and commercial tv channels and has banned criticial questioning from news conferences, ANP says.
‘The European treaty says every EU country should guarantee press freedom. The European parliamentary green faction is considering legal action against Italy,’ Sargentini said. ‘If we attack Bulgaria and Romania when things don’t go well, we should also dare to challenge Berlusconi.’
If a majority of European MPs back legal action, the European court of justice will take up the case, ANP says.
