Who will replace Van Basten at Ajax?
Speculation is rife in the Dutch press on Thursday about who will replace Marco van Basten as trainer at Amsterdam football club Ajax.
Van Basten resigned as chief coach on Wednesday with immediate effect, citing his failure to achieve his targets. Nor did he feel confident he could improve the team next season, the club said in a statement.
Ajax is set to finish third in the premier division, failing to qualify for the lucrative Champions League competition. Ajax also failed to make it through to the final stages of the Dutch national cup.
Experienced
The Telegraaf points out that a number of prominent trainers with Ajax experience are currently without contracts. Frank Rijkaard, Co Adriaanse and Ronald Koeman are among the big names.
Frank de Boer has already ruled himself out of the job, preferring to focus on the national squad as deputy trainer to Bert van Marwijk, the paper says. The AD reports Guus Hiddink has also said no.
Rijkaard, who leaves Barcelona at the end of this season, is clearly favourite with the readers of both the Telegraaf and the AD, according to online polls.
Players
Ajax captain Thomas Vermaelen says in Thursday’s Telegraaf that the team has to share the blame as well. ‘We did not see his resignation coming, not even after the 4-0 defeat by Sparta.’ That defeat ended Ajax’s Champion’s League hopes.
Van Basten has been coach at Ajax since July 2008 after spending four years in charge of the Dutch national team.
His assistant John van ‘t Schip will be in charge at the last match of the season, against the premier division’s second placed FC Twente, Ajax said.
