The Netherlands relies on the United States for more of its energy than on any other country, after a decade in which American oil and gas displaced Russian supplies, figures from national statistics office CBS show.

The US supplied 24% of the country’s energy in 2025, up from just 3% in 2015. Russia, once a major source, has fallen to below 3%, down from 21% in 2021, since its invasion of Ukraine.

The Netherlands imported 77% of its energy last year, up from 70% in 2015. CBS said the increase was driven mainly by the winding down of gas extraction in Groningen, which stopped entirely in October 2023.

The US is now the largest source of both oil and gas. American gas arrives entirely as liquefied natural gas carried by ship, unlike Norwegian gas, which mostly reaches the country through pipelines. Norway remains the second-largest supplier overall, at about 14%.

The shift mirrors a wider European move away from Russian energy. Across the EU, reliance on Russia fell from 19% in 2021 to 3% by 2024, while dependence on the US grew over the same period.
