Oar fish washed up on Wadden islands
Two oar fish (regalescus glesne) have been washed up on the beaches of the Wadden islands of Texel and Vlieland, the first time the fish has ever been seen in the Netherlands, news agency ANP reports.
The fish, also known as the king of herrings, are thought to be 15 to 30 years old.
Oar fish are said to be the longest fish in the world, growing beyond 8 metres in length at times. ANP did not say how long the Wadden examples are.
