Schools need more social involvement

The education system needs more hands-on involvement from all areas of society, from the business community to politics, sports and culture, says the education council in a new report on Tuesday.

It says too that the number of teaching hours laid down by law should be seen as a ‘starting point’ and recommends that a wider spectrum of activities should be organised outside the traditional classroom.
While the educational standard reached by Dutch pupils up to the age of 15 remains ‘good’ in international terms, performance has worsened in a number of areas including reading and maths, the education council says.
