Dutch Rail to charge €20 in advance
Dutch Rail wants to charge passengers using the new public transport payment card (OV-chipkaart) €20 at the start of their journey.
The card will automatically deduct the amount from the card at the beginning of a trip and refund the difference when the passenger checks out at the end.
NS wants to start a trial with the public transport card on the route to Schiphol airport in May, says the NOS tv website.
Travellers using the public transport card in Rotterdam pay a €4 step-in charge.
Earlier this week it emerged that around 200,000 people have forgotten to check out at the end of a trip. This means that on average they paid double the normal fare for a journey.
