Stunt prices aim to boost big sales

The financial crisis is allowing consumers to pick up a number of bargains, such as a free car, the Volkskrant reports on Thursday.

One property developer is offering a €50,000 discount on the price of its houses, says the paper.
And i n Woerden, a Renault car dealer is giving a runabout Twingo free of charge to anyone who buys an Espace SUV.
In addition, many shops are holding sales long before Christmas and the petrol stations are offering cheap petrol, the paper says.
Ton Bos of the Retail Wholesale group told the Volkskrant that shopkeepers are desperate to sell rather than be left with a lot of stock.
But the paper warns all these reductions could lead to deflation. It quotes marketing advisor Rogier van Kralingen who calls the reductions ‘unwise’. He says it is more sensible to keep prices the same and offer customers more in the way of service.
