‘Use aid money to return refugees’ CDA
The government should use money from the development aid budget to give refugees whose application to remain in the country has been turned down and illegal immigrants extra cash to leave the country, says Christian Democrat MP Wim van de Kamp.
At the moment, 45% of asylum-seekers whose applications have been rejected actually leave the Netherlands, some voluntarily and some through forced deportations.
But by investing €10m of aid money in extra payments, this percentage could be considerably increased, Van de Kamp is quoted as saying in Monday’s Volkskrant.
The Netherlands sets aside 0.8% of gross national product for development aid. ‘We are still fanatical supporters of that 0.8%. I want to change the criteria of what constitutes aid to include this idea,’ Van de Kamp told the paper.
Changes in asylum procedures
Immigration minister Nebahat Albayrak (Labour) is due to outline changes she wants to make in the asylum procedure to parliament this week. In particular, the minister wants to reduce the number of applications asylum-seekers can make.
The orthodox Christian ChristenUnie and Labour parties who are the CDA’s partners in the coalition government said they would also like to see more active regulation to ensure people return to their country of origin. However the parties declined to comment on the CDA proposal, the Volkskrant said.
According to the Telegraaf, refugees can already get a cash payout, which can be as high as several thousands of euros per family, if they agree to leave the country.
