Polluting lorries banned from Amsterdam

A large section of Amsterdam is no longer open to lorries which do not comply to strict anti-pollution regulations, reports Friday’s Parool newspaper.

The new regulation introduced by the council is intended to reduce harmful emissions by 15% by 2010, the paper says.
The so-called environmental zone – which includes the whole area inside the A10 ring road (except Amsterdam North) – is the biggest in the country which now has a total of nine such zones.
Truck drivers have been given three months to get used to the new Amsterdam system but will face fines of €150 from January if they break the regulation.
The council also plans to bring in a ban on polluting cars
