Dutch beat Iceland in World Cup qualifier
The Netherlands beat Iceland 2-0 in the World Cup qualifier on Saturday night, with goals from Joris Mathijsen and Klaas Jan Huntelaar.
Holland now has six points from two matches and takes on Norway on Wednesday.
The Dutch squad was missing a number of players through injury and Nigel de Jong left the field on Saturday with what seems like a knee injury.
‘Despite that, we made a solid start, playing good and fast football,’ coach Bert van Marwijk was reported as saying after the game.
The match was not without reference to the problems surrounding Icelandic internet bank Icesave, reports the Telegraaf.
Several Dutch supporters carried banners calling for help for Dutch savers.
And a banner reading ‘we have your money’ waved by Iceland supporters after the first Dutch goal was confiscated by stewards, the paper says.
