Ban on mink farms unlikely to get support

A draft law by the Labour and Socialist parties to ban mink farming in the Netherlands is unlikely to get majority support in parliament, the AD newspaper says on Wednesday.

Supporters of the ban can count on 70 out of 150 votes. However, the orthodox Christian ChristenUnie and anti-immigration PVV parties, who could sway the vote, seem to have decided not to back a ban, the paper says.
This is because the bill does not include financial compensation for mink farmers.
The Netherlands is the third biggest producer of mink fur in the world, with some four million animals killed for their pelts every year.
MPs will vote on the proposal on Thursday.
