Volendam man to appear in Canadian court

No complaints of child sex abuse have been made in the Netherlands against Anton Rapati, the 85-year-old Volendam man arrested in Canada last week, the Telegraaf reports on Wednesday.

Rapati will appear in court in Canada on Thursday, charged with abusing children between 1971 and 1978 while he worked as a gardener. He fled the country in 1993.
Since then, Rapati has lived in Volendam, where he worked as a volunteer for the local amateur football club. He returned to Canada earlier this month.
Two days before he was arrested, the word ‘pedofiel’ was sprayed on a window at his home and the front door was kicked in.
One source told the Telegraaf that Rapati was on the run from people who wanted to get even with him. ‘At the beginning of the month he was completely hysterical and wanted to get away as soon as possible,’ the source was quoted as saying.
The source said that Rapati went to Canada, where his brother lives, every year and was also there in April. He also made regular trips to Germany and Romania.
Meanwhile Edam-Volendam town council says it will not take any steps to clear out Rapati’s garbage-piled home pending possible evidence-gathering by the Canadian authorities. Neighbours have complained about the smell which is ‘unimaginable’, council official Wim Runderkamp told the paper.
