‘Restraining’ patients to be debated

MPs are asking for an explanation of the practice of tying up patients in nursing homes ahead of a debate on the subject next week, reports Wednesday’s Volkskrant.

The move follows the deaths of seven people this year after they were tied to their beds or chairs.
Last week the health inspectorate announced tougher controls on the practice, saying several deaths could have been avoided.
Restraints are used to keep people in bed or to stop them wandering off, says the paper. There are usually two deaths a year and no one can explain the sudden increase in numbers.
