Newspaper takes phone taps to European court

The Telegraaf is to ask the European court of human rights to overturn a ruling by the Dutch judicial system which said that the country’s secret service AIVD was within its rights to tap telephone calls made by two journalists.

‘This contravenes the right of freedom of expression and press freedom,’ the paper’s lawyer Bas Le Poole told ANP news service on Wednesday.
The AIVD decided to listen in to Bart Mos and Joost de Haas in 2006 after they published confidential state documents.
