Better treatment for deportees

The regime for asylum-seekers who have been refused permission to stay in the country who are awaiting deportation is to be softened, reports Tuesday’s Volkskrant.

Junior justice minister Nebahat Albayrak told parliament they will be treated less like prisoners.
Her statement follows criticism from Amnesty International that the Netherlands treats its deportees like criminals.
In future, those awaiting deportation in detention camps will be able to make greater use of the exercise yard, the library and the sports hall. They may also be allowed more frequent visits and will have better access to legal aid.
