Rover spokesman sacked for making threats

Public transport users organisation Rover has sacked its spokesman Rikus Spithorst for making threats against GroenLinks party leader Femke Halsema, according to reports in the Dutch press on Monday.

Using the the pseudoniem Driek Oplopers, Spithorst wrote an item on the website Fok.nl saying Halsema’s house should be set on fire. The comment was meant to be a satirical note following the resignation of GroenLinks MP Wijnand Duyvendak because of his environmental activist past.
Rover said on Sunday that although Spithorst’s comments were meant as satire they did not come across as such and the organisation did not want to be associated with them.
The Labour party (PvdA) also ended its association with Spithorst, say press reports. He had been writing a fortnightly column for the party’s website.
