Olympics: hockey women reach final

The Dutch women’s hockey team reached the Olympic final on Wednesday with a 5-2 victory over Argentina. The women will now play for the gold medal against host country China on Friday.


In other Olympic news: runner Jeroen Lathouwers finished third in the quarter-finals of the 800m in the same time as first two but was denied a place in the semi-finals, despite the Dutch team’s official protest.
On the opening day of a brand-new Olympic event – BMX cycling – Raymon van der Biezen and Rob van den Wildenberg reached Thursday’s semi-finals.
Twin sisters Bianca and Sonja van der Velden came ninth in the synchronized swimming final. Afterwards they told ANP that they will finish their professional career and start ‘making real money’ with a swimming act at a Las Vegas casino.
