Betting monopoly closes Euro 2008 book

The state-owned betting agency Toto has closed its books on some matches at the Euro 2008 football championships because of fears it might not make enough profit, the Telegraaf reports on Tuesday.

‘We do not have the ability to insure ourselves against large payouts through other games,’ director Tjeerd Veenstra told the paper.
Gamblers told the paper the decision is forcing them to bet on the illegal circuit. Toto is the only company licensed to offer betting in the Netherlands.
