Queen Beatrix is expats’ favourite royal
Some 55% of the Dutch are proud of their country, and just 12% are not at all proud of the Netherlands, according to a survey of 24,000 people for tv programme EénVandaag.
The survey coincides with the forthcoming holiday season, starting with the Queen’s Day celebrations on April 30.
The poll shows that princess Máxima is the country’s favourite royal with 27% of the vote. Queen Beatrix is in second place and crown-prince Willem Alexander is third.
Around half of those polled have a Dutch flag at home and two-thirds of them plan to fly it on Queen’s Day. Nevertheless, most of those polled think that the Dutch are less proud of their country than their European neighbours, news agency ANP reports.
People are most proud of Dutch common sense, followed by the country’s tolerance, sense of humour, helpfulness and blunt approach. But the Dutch are not snappy dressers and do not understand cultural issues, the poll found.
A survey of expats for the Dutch world service found that 72% think the Dutch royal family is a positive influence for the Dutch doing business abroad. Queen Beatrix is the expat’s favourite royal.
