Chaotic scenes at Groninginen stadium fire
A fire on a stand at FC Groningen’s football stadium before the first-division football match between the home team and Amsterdam’s Ajax led to chaotic scenes on Sunday afternoon.
Clouds of billowing smoke, possibly caused by toilet rolls being set on fire, greeted the teams as they arrived on the pitch. Hundreds of fans climbed on to the pitch to get away from the fumes.
According to the AD Sportwereld, the emergency exits to the BB section of the stand were only opened once the situation threatened to get out of hand.
A number of fans were treated for burns and the effects of smoke.
‘I have never seen anything like this,’ Ajax coach Adri Koster told news agency ANP.
According to various media reports, a group of hardcore fans planned to bombard the pitch with toilet rolls before the match started and had placed three rolls under every seat in the area behind the goal.
