Muslim groups make own tolerance appeal

Muslim organisations publish their own appeal for more tolerance in the Trouw on Thursday following a similar initiative in an unique front page advertisement in the same paper yesterday.

According to Abdelmajid Khairoun, chairman of the Dutch Muslim Council, the organisations want to show that they are not just bystanders in society but a pro-active group.
‘We too see that there are people who are afraid of others because of their origins, sex, religion or sexual orientation,’ say the Muslim organisations in the Trouw.
They say too that parents must take more responsibility for teenagers who cause problems.
Khairoun said at least 90 people have signed the appeal including prominent Turks, Surinamers and, Moroccans, reports ANP news service.
Yesterday a group of over 50 prominent people ranging from politicians and business leaders to sport and media personalities published an appeal for tolerance in a full page advertisment on the front page of the Trouw. The inititative is led by the chairman of the HBO college Council Doeke Terpstra.
