Millions overpaid health, housing benefits
Two million of the six million claims for health or housing benefit last year were made in error and will have to be returned, the NRC reports on Tuesday, quoting tax office documents.
The paper says the figures are based on a reassement of two million claims. The amounts to be paid back range from a few euros to thousands, the paper says.
Low income households can claim extra help in paying health insurance and rent based on an estimate of their annual income. The money is paid out in advance.
Almost one million households claimed help with rent, nearly five million with health insurance. In total, the government paid out €4.4bn in advance benefits, the paper says.
Meanwhile, the tax office announced on Tuesday that some 800,000 people will receive a rebate on their health insurance because their income was less than expected.
