Ehsan Jami, chairman of the committee for ex-Muslims and Labour councillor in Leidschendam-Voorburg, has been placed under extra security on the orders of the national anti-terrorist coordinator.

The move follows an attack on the 22-year-old Jami in Voorburg at the weekend and the massive media attention which followed. No details of the extra protection measures have been released.
On Monday Jami told ANP news agency that he was ‘too emotional’ to talk about the attack but his advisor, publicist Afshin Ellian, said Jami was attacked by three men of non-Dutch origin who were waiting for him as he came out of a supermarket. It was not the first time that Jami, who is originally Iranian, has been abused, said Ellian.
Jami has made several controversial statements about Islam, calling Mohammed a ‘terrible man’ in one interview, said ANP. He has set up a committee for ex-Muslims to bring taboo issues such as domestic violence in the Muslim community into the open and to promote religious freedom of expression.
In an interview with the Nova current affairs programme last night Jami said he does not intend to moderate his tone. ‘They can hurt my body but not my ideology,’ he is reported as saying.
Harry Oldersma, leader of the Labour party in the Leidschendam-Voorburg council, told ANP he was ‘shocked and angry’ at the attack on Jami. ‘It’s just not right that you can be beaten up for having an opinion’.
