Van Geel to lead CDA in parliament
As widely expected, outgoing environment minister Pieter van Geel was officially appointed as the new parliamentary leader of the ruling Christian Democrat party (CDA) on Wednesday. Van Geel (55) was the only candidate and replaces Maxime Verhagen who is foreign affairs minister in the new cabinet.
Van Geel is the third new parliamentary leader to be named by the coalition parties. Jacques Tichelaar has been appointed to lead Labour MPs and Arie Slob is the new parliamentary leader of the orthodox ChristenUnie.
