Hiddink faces 10 months for tax fraud
Soccer coach Gus Hiddink should be jailed for 10 months for tax fraud, the public prosecution department said late on Tuesday. The prosecution alleges Hiddink, who currently manages the Russian national team, evaded paying €1.4m in tax between 2002 and 2003 by claiming to live in Belgium.
Hiddink, who at the time was coach of South Korea, owned a house in the village of Achel, close to the Dutch border. However, the prosecution says he never used it, preferring instead to stay with his girlfriend in Amsterdam.
Hiddink’s accountant, described as the brain behind the fraud, faces a 14-month sentence. The verdict is due on February 27.
