Fewer but bigger supermarkets
Around 25% of the supermarket chains in the Netherlands will disappear over the next few years, according to research by Rabobank and the Erasmus Food Management Institute.
In particular, supermarkets which target the middle segment of the market will be squeezed out. The researchers predict the number of megastores will go up from some 100 now to 250 by 2015.
