Ex-minister warns on road pricing

The new government should not introduce road pricing too quickly or it will risk losing popular support for the measure, outgoing transport minister Karla Peijs says in today’s Financieele Dagblad.

The new cabinet wants to introduce road pricing in stages by 2011, one year earlier than the outgoing cabinet’s deadline of 2012. ‘It has to work 100%… the system must be watertight,’ Peijs said as a warning to her successor Camiel Eurlings.
‘People should not be able to sit around at birthday parties exchanging tips on how to play around with the kilometre counters,’ she said.
