Amsterdam football club Ajax’s hopes of pulling off a remarkable comeback in the second leg of its UEFA Cup tie were dashed on Thursday night after Werder Bremen equalised in the 10th minute. Ajax, which lost the first leg in Germany 3-0, won last night’s match 3-1.

Alkmaar’s AZ just made it through to the next round of the UEFA Cup with a last minute goal against Fenerbahce of Istanbul on Thursday night to level the score at 2-2. Last week’s away match against Fenerbahce was also a draw (3-3), but the Dutch team are through on the basis of scoring more away goals.
