A majority of MPs think Princess Maxima should be given the title queen when Crown Prince Willem Alexander becomes king. The Christian Democrats, Labour and Liberals are in favour, the Telegraaf reported on Saturday. ‘In Dutch hearts she is that already and I can imagine that we formalise the position,’ said CDA MP Liesbethe Spies.

Labour MP Mariëtte Hamer told the paper it was traditional that the wives of kings be given the title queen. Opponents say that it would be misleading to give Maxima the title of queen because Queen Beatrix, Juliana and Wilhelmina all had constitutional roles. Their consorts remained officially princes.
