Government to spotlight illegal gambling

The justice ministry is to launch an investigation to see if steps to stamp out illegal gambling introduced after its last probe six years ago have been successful. The department also wants to find out how much money is involved in the illegal circuit.

In 2000 illegal casinos and gambling via internet had an annual turnover of €230m and clear links with organised crime, the ministry said.
The Netherlands’ legal casinos are all under state control.
