THIRD PARTY CONTENT: Of course you want to choose health insurance that you are happy with all year round. But how do you know if you’ve chosen the right one? With this checklist, you can be sure you’ve thought of everything.
- Choose the right own risk
The minimum own risk in the Netherlands with the health insurance is € 385. This is the first part of your yearly health costs that you have to pay yourself. But you can choose to take a higher own risk. If you choose to increase your own risk, your monthly premium will decrease. So if you want to save, this is an important point to look at. If you don’t expect to exceed the mandatory own risk then you can opt for up to €835.
- Choose the right choice of care provider
Do you want to be able to decide for yourself where you undergo treatment? Then it is important to choose an insurance policy where you have a free choice of care provider. If that does not matter to you, you can save money by taking out a cheaper insurance policy that only pays for you to be treated by hospitals, doctors and other providers the insurer has a contract with.
- Find discounts
Although the discounts are not as high as they used to be on Dutch health insurances there are still some collectives offering collective health insurance. Consumers collective UnitedConsumers, for example, offers discounts on the basis health insurance package and on supplementary insurance.
- Choose the additional insurance you need
Do you have specific care needs such as special medicines or alternative care? And do you think you will have to go to the dentist for more than one check-up this year? Then you may benefit from taking out additional insurance. Take a good look at the different coverage in relation to the premium. If you take out expensive additional dental insurance while you only have a hundred euros in costs per year, it might not be financially worth it.
- Don’t double insure yourself
Take a good look at which insurance policies you already have that may already cover things for which you do not have to take out cover. This way you avoid unnecessary costs. Travel insurance can in some cases overlap with health insurance, for example.
- Focus on family needs
Does your family consist of several people? In that case, look first at individual care needs and don’t necessarily take out the same policy for everyone. Children up to the age of 18 are co-insured with the parents so include them with the parent who has the most cover. This way you get the most out of your insurance policy.
