Belgian theatre director Ivo van Hove tops this year’s NRC list of the most influential people and organisations in the Dutch cultural sector. Van Hove has worked in the Netherlands since 1990 and is currently artistic director of Toneelgroep Amsterdam.

Van Hove, who was in fifth place in last year’s list, has grown into an international star with his work in Paris and New York, including the David Bowie production Lazarus, the NRC said. His Broadway production of A view from the Bridge was rewarded with two Tonys, the most important US theatre prize.

The NRC list is compiled by 10 experts from the Netherlands and abroad.

1 Ivo van Hove (director)

2 Rem Koolhaas (architect)

3 Marlene Dumas (artist)

4 Rijksmuseum Amsterdam

5 Irma Boom (graphic designer)

6 Anton Corbyn (photographer and film maker)

7 Jaap van Zweden (conductor)

9 Hella Jongerius (designer)

10 Concertgebouw orchestra
