Transmitter fires disrupt radio and tv broadcasts

Separate fires in two large Dutch radio and television transmitters caused major disruption to media broadcasts at the weekend.

The massive Lopik transmitter was shut down to allow experts to try to determine the cause of a small fire in a transmission facility. According to media reports, this was possibly caused by a short circuit.
The Hoogersmilde transmitter, which was nearly 300m high, collapsed following another fire. It may have been hit by lightning during a storm, Nos television said.
Transmitter association Novec said there is no link between the two fires. It is simply an absurd coincidence, a spokesman said.
