Wage rises hit 40-year high, hospitality workers benefit most
Wages rose by an average of 5% in the first quarter of 2023, almost twice the figure of a year ago but not enough to offset the impact of inflation, national statistics agency CBS said on Thursday.
The consumer price index was 6.6% higher in the January to March period, the CBS said. Nevertheless, the 5% average rise is the highest in 40 years.
The biggest increase went to people working in the hospitality sector, whose wages have risen 8% – a figure which includes the impact of increasing the minimum wage 10%. Last year, hospitality sector workers saw their pay increase by just 0.3%.
The transport and civil service sectors also saw wage rises approaching 8%. The lowest pay increase – 2.5% – went to people working in the property sector.
