One of the three meerkats which escaped from a private zoo last month remains at large, one has been caught and one is thought to have been run over.

One of the animals was recaptured on Saturday after it was spotted in the kitchen of a family home in ‘s Gravenzande. Nico Knegt used a basket to catch the meerkat, receiving a nasty bite for his troubles.

The animal has now been taken to an animal sanctuary for health checks, after which it will be transferred to a new home with other meerkats. Its original owner, retired businessman Jan Knoppert, says it needs to be with a group because meerkats are social animals.

According to local animal charity Stichting Dierenhulp Westland, one of the remaining meerkats has been run over. The third remains at large.
