The state information service RVD has published a new series of official photographs of princess Beatrix, to mark her 85th birthday on Tuesday.

The portrait, featuring the former queen, current king Willem-Alexander and future queen Amalia, were taken by Gemmy Woud-Binnendijk at the Dutch royals’ working palace Noordeinde in The Hague.

Beatrix was queen from April 30 1980 until April 30, 2013 when she resigned in favour of her eldest son.

Willem Alexander, his wife Maxima and eldest daughter Amalia are currently visiting the former Dutch colonies in the Caribbean. The trip is Amalia’s first official state visit.

The visit, which aims to introduce Amalia to the Caribbean part of the kingdom, takes in all six of the islands, ending with the smallest – Saba – on February 9.
